IKEA takes a lot of flack for being "IKEA". It carries with it connotations of cheap and immature, something you use until you become a "grown up". I will tell you that I have a very love/hate relationship with IKEA. I love the catalog, it's arrival is one of the best times of the year. I hate the store! They never have what I want, I can never find a person to help me, and I usually leave my cart in frustration at the end, with out going through the line. But here is what makes it all worth while. I love this bed. I want to completely redecorate both of my girls rooms around this bed. It's amazing!

Little girl wants her wall to be purple. Her headboard is a soft aqua (but UPDATE, the bed is turned sideways now, in a daybed fashion) and the other large piece with color in her room is her kitchen (which I was gonna link to my blog post about, until I realized I never posted it! oops, next up DIY play kitchen), which is kind of a bright peachy, pinky, slightly coraly color. So I did not want to paint bright purple walls and end up looking like a mish mosh out of one of those dated “How to decorate a Kid’s room” books. The plan evolved to this, use a lilac paint with a Moroccan tile stencil. This post is getting too long, I am boring myself. Looked everywhere, couldn’t find stencil, then thought of Etsy, stencils found.

We got an order the other day from a customer by the name of Catherine Bell. I thought, surely it can’t be THE Catherine Bell. But it was!!!

She bought these lovelies. Can’t wait to see pictures…

I love bad ass, hardcore women (especially ones that buy stuff from us), and trust me, she is! She’s got a resume of television series (Jag, Army Wives), a movie career, she rides motorcycles and she’s a mom! I only do one of those things (guess which one), might be time to get my act together, huh?

I don’t know if you can tell that it is pouring ice from the sky with total abandon. This has been going on, off and on, for 2 days. In between the slush and hail sessions, we have periods of the bluest sky and bright warm sunshine. The weather is so bizarre, I would not be surprised if it rained meatballs next. Pacific Northwest is going through an identity crisis.

Oh, and how’s this for hard working… In an effort to make my chimney FABULOUS, he worked until the scaffold was covered in a treacherous layer of hail, and then called it a day. The outside of my house almost looks finished, after merely 3 years. Mother Nature, don’t screw this up for me, or else!

Well, I don’t think it would be presumptuous to say that I am the first person in the world to own something from the Liberty of London line for Target. Yesterday, 2 full days prior to the launch, I bought this lampshade. So, my photography skills are even better with my cell phone, right? Anyhow, don’t even have a place to put it. I was thinking about putting it in Leah’s room, but I think it may be too birdy. Peacock feathers, song birds? This is her lamp.
Too much. I will find a place. Mostly, I just wanted to be first.

Sometimes they throw in fashion, which I tolerate, because I have no choice, and occasionally I try to not look like an idiot when I get dressed, so it’s helpful to have some idea what’s in style. (more so, now that I have the store) Anyhow, here is one that I will read. We were mentioned on Style Court. No big deal, I mean, being noticed by a well respected blogger and designer that has been mentioned in ELLE Decor, design*sponge and InStyle happens to me all the time.

No, it totally doesn’t! This was super exciting! It happened a few days ago, and we got a ton of response, which has kept me busy as a little bee talking with clients and doing our first Greyhound shipment. This is why I didn’t even have time to post about it.

Oh yeah, I should also point out that the post wasn’t really so much about Scavenger Home, as it was about a particular desk. Our lovely shiny red number with the fab lion head pulls, but still…

Happy day and a little DIY tip

It was a truly happy day when I stumbled across this little chandelier. While my initial instinct is to have everything painting in some amazing, fresh, bright color, I end up restraining myself, so that the customer can decide for themselves. (they are always right, you know) But this needed a little pop, right away.

Here is the DIY part. This is soooooo easy. I made a little navy chevron print on photoshop and printed it. You can also just search Bing images for whatever pattern you are looking for. Make sure it is large enough and high enough resolution that it will print well. (not advocating copyright infringement. whatever) Then just cut and past. Easy breezy. You can take the little round plastic tubes off your chandelier, run a line of double sided tape or adhesive down one end, stick it on, roll it around and another strip of adhesive down the end. I know these instructions seem stunted and a little vague. This is just SOOO easy, that I don’t want to over do it on instructions. You can figure it out, it’s pretty obvious.

I just love it when I can make my world more stylish and fantastic using nothing but stickers, like in my bathroom floor makeover.

Jenny, from one of my favorite blogs, Little Green Notebook, just posted this mind blowing “sticker” from Surface View. They are in the UK, so you know, the dollar sucks right now, and then there’s shipping, blah blah blah, but I am telling you, this is still cheap.

Here are a couple more that I will have to have at some point in my life.

that my headboards twin (actually a queen) is currently residing in this over the top guest bedroom in designer Jay Jeffers house. Talk about versatile, this headboard can clearly swing both ways.

So, I have to say that Fyndes has been really great. They seem to really give personal attention to their dealers. I kindof assumed there was just a computer on the other end, but Mark @ Fyndes is actually who pointed out the whole headboard thing to me. It was also mentioned here. Isn’t that nice?

You may find this hard to believe, considering how naturally and brilliantly blogging has come to me, but there was a day, not too long ago, when I didn't understand what a blog was, much less why one would "follow" a blog.

That is, until I discovered Design*Sponge. Grace Bonney instantly became the go to girl for all of my decorating and style questions and inspiration. While I have since cultivated a complete obsession with regularly pouring over about a million and a half design blogs, Design*Sponge is still the standard by which all are measured.

So today is a happy day for me, my blog, my store, my kids, my dog and anyone else that will listen to me, since our little floor remodel was included among the other amazing before and afters on Design*Sponge!!!!

You know you're jealous that I have email in my inbox from Grace, herself. Control yourselves.

Oy, The Floor

Step 1
remove/clean old flooring

Step 2
We used Novalis Vinyl 4” x 36” planks in Timber Natural Oak from Lowe’s found here. We cut them exactly in half. Measure, then score on top with straight edge and utility knife. Just snap, and stack. We did one, and then used that as the measuring and straight edge for the rest.

Step 3
Decide what you want to line up with. We decided that we wanted the points to meet in a line centered on the toilet. Obviously, this will depend on the room you are doing. Also, when we laid the planks in the toilet area, it was removed for repair. Much nicer outcome than trying to cut around the toilet, and not really a difficult thing to do.

Step 4
At this point, it’s mostly just peel and stick. So easy, and SOOOO satisfying, because you see the transformation so quickly and easily. Don’t worry if there are tiny gaps. It lends authenticity, ala Exquisite Surfaces.

Step 5
After you get your first 2 rows done and start on the 3rd, you will have some that don’t quite fit. It’s sooo easy to fix. Just use your straight edge and super sharp blade and trim where necessary. Use your next piece to measure and mark, then cut right through.

Step 6
When you have laid the body of the floor, take your scraps and go around the edges and fill in the smaller bits. It’s so easy to cut, if you have curves, just use heavy duty scissors. I think I spent about $60 on this project.

Our 1st (and best yet) Before and After

The Scavenger Home bathroom left quite a lot to be desired when we moved in, but were we daunted? No, (yes), and it’s a rental, (not to mention the high failure rate in retail, crappy economy, etc…) so we had to do it on very little dime. Honestly, I really think this is the coolest project. Check it out.

Yikes, right? Ok, so here goes.
Paint, change mirror, cover disgusting water heater, new lighting, replace the sink, no wait, that’s too expensive, well, fix it somehow, and then there’s the floor, oy…

Paint – Benjamin Moore in Hale Navy High Gloss – “OMG” best paint color ever!
Change Mirror – Bad mom. Totally stole it straight off the wall of my kids bathroom. Nobody wants vain kids anyhow, right? Originally from Urban Outfitters, but I don’t think they carry it anymore.
Cover Water Heater – scored totally gorgeous sample from F. Schumacher at design center for 20 bucks. Yay! By the way, also rebuilt wonky little table over it with wood cut to size at Home Depot.
New Lighting - took down ugly plastic thing. Bought only slightly less ugly brass/glass thing from craigslist for $20. Sort of like this before I removed the etched glass panels and the brass “wheel” that the glass hung from.

Fix Sink – didn’t want to replace the sink in a rental, even though it was leaning off the wall in a precariously forward position. And here is why being a pack rat sometimes pays off. Finally found a use for a chrome sink stand that we didn’t use building our house. Dismantled it and stole it’s legs. Wedged them under front of ugly, institutional sink. And voila! You can turn an ugly, institutional sink into a silk purse. Should have replaced the faucet, but too lazy.
The Floor – ok, here is the part that makes me all shiny and happy. The floor was really nasty lino tiles, dirty, broken and finished. Removed, cleaned, then what? Inspired by this post on design*sponge, we put our own spin on it. I will do a detailed how to post on the floor, but I can say this. It’s like giant stickers!

Ok, now, as usual, it looks so much better in person. I can’t even tell you. The blue is much richer, blah blah, bad photographer, blah blah blah.

We are super excited to now be a part of the growing community at Fyndes.com. Fyndes was said to be the "best vintage shopping on the web" by the LA Times, and now that Scavenger Home is there, it's true!

Actually there are a ton of other crazy fabulous, beautiful things listed on there. Mostly in LA, but that's ok. It's our first step toward market dominance. First LA, then the world!

Ok, we would settle for being successful enough to keep doing what we are doing for a long, long time.

Not this year. Nope, not gonna do it. All due to Santa’s new “Committee on the Environment”. That’s right, it’s all very bureaucratic, and there is a lot of bickering across party lines, but they managed to get at least something passed before the holiday recess. The new pilot program is as follows. If you put a stack of reusable bags next to the cookies and milk on Christmas Eve, presents from Santa will hence forth be delivered in said bags. The efficacy of this program and it’s impact on the deficit will be up for review in 2015, but by then my kids will have outgrown it so I don’t care. So, in order to appeal to the public’s overwhelming support for a green option, Scavenger Home is now carrying Living Ethos Gift Bags. Amazing patterns and colors for year round giving, ribbons made of recycled pop bottles (yeah, I say POP, what do you say?) and 4 sizes, to fit jewelry, wine, a new phone and a yummy, fuzzy, but NOT terry, robe. Or, I guess other things of those approximate sizes, if you and I don’t have the exact same Christmas list. And in my usual fashion of being totally timely, I will mention that for those of us that do give gifts all 8 nights of Chanukah, might I recommend using the same bag every night! I swear it’s brilliant, just throw a little something in the bag before you light the candles, and voila, your the Jewish equivalent of Martha.

I am staring the current economic conditions right in the face and saying “HA!”!

Since only like 3 people read this, you probably already know that I am opening up my very own vintage furniture shop, Scavenger Home. Since, again, you all know me, it would be fruitless to try to portray this endeavor as a graceful, calm, well oiled machine. I am a basket case trying to get it all done in time for a December 1st Grand Opening. Can’t miss the Holiday Season, you know.

I intend to post pictures, and give a rundown of the process here on this little blog, but that will all have to come after the fact. For now, you will have to settle with the artwork for the sign. Like it?

Come and shop, or just hang out, browse, sip some hot tea, make it look like I have tons of customers, keep me company, maybe buy something if it catches your fancy, whatever you like… I’ll be there.

Scavenger items galore. You know the drill; bad pictures, good stuff.

Hello, Kitty.
How darling is she? She would be very sweet next to a fireplace, or in a little girls room.

Mod in Italy... oh, somebody stop me. You may not believe me, but this is not just a table, it's a lamp too! How fabulous is that? You can turn on the top cluster of flowers or the bottom, or both, to get the perfect ambiance for your cocktail as it rests on the lovely little table top. It has the tiniest little stamped metal tag that says MADE IN ITALY.

Mirror, mirrors....are better photographed on the wall.
You all have good taste, a creative flair; vision, if you will. That is why I know you can look past this absurdly composed picture, and see this mirror in all it's glory. Beautiful in it's fabulously vintage-y current condition, or in a high gloss white or some yummy color. You decide.

You know what they say about the size of a lamps shade...
Ok, this lamp is HUGE. 22 1/2" to the top of the marble and 37" to the top of the shade. Bad shade, ignore it. Imagine peacock blue silk, or black with gold lining, or any number of lovely combinations. So pretty! circa 1960's

Night night, night light. (that will have to do, until I become more clever than I am)
Adorable is the first word that comes to mind. In a totally eastern influence sort of way. Is your kid too cool for Pottery Barn, but still needs a little ambient lighting for bedtime? This emits a perfect warm glow and is about 12" high.

Tufting and brass together, what more can a girl ask for?
These are the sexiest legs I have ever seen. This little bench is in perfect condition with the ever so charming original gold brocade fabric. Very sweet. It would , however, be smokin' in charcoal velvet or in black patent. Oh my, imagine the possibilities!

Don't they make a beautiful couple? He doesn't have to flash his feathers, since he has already found his other half. He has a bit of a fierce look in his eye, while she is just as demure and graceful as can be. Don't tell anyone, but they're not metal (they're plastic, shh). It doesn't make them any less lovely...but it does make them less expensive!

I am a scavenger by nature. I am willing to slog through piles of nothing to find that wonderful something. I have been trying to convince my husband of the value of this trait for some time, and I think I finally found the “something” that will do it.

Estate sales and auctions never fail to amaze me. You would assume that all the swarms of people that line up an hour in advance are quite skilled at spotting the diamond in the rough. Usually that makes me second guess my taste when all the things I think are fabulous are overlooked by all these seasoned pros. Not any more. I just got a big dose of confidence that I do, in fact, have some idea of what I am doing. (at least for the moment)

At a recent estate auction in Sammamish, of all places, I hit the proverbial “jackpot”! I found a pristine condition original Robert Deyber painting. As I am not an art collector, I must admit that I didn’t know exactly how spectacular a find this was, but I did have some idea that it was special. Turns out, I was right.

This amazing piece of surrealist art is titled “Killing Two Birds with One Stone”. I am embarrassed to show this picture as my camera and I basically butchered it, but hopefully you can get a sense of it.

I will not be so bold as to try to describe the art or the artist, except to say you would be well served to check out his work at the Martin Lawrence Gallery or at his own website, robertdeyber.com.

I am giddy with the thrill of a successful hunt, and hopefully will use this momentum to post more of my incredible recent finds. Look for the most amazing smoked glass 70’s crescent desk that I will be posting in the next day or two, as well as some other pieces that I’m sure you just can’t live without.

The Viceroy in Miami is officially, without question, the BEST place I have ever been in my life. No matter where you look, you are surround by such divine luxury, that it's hard to breath. My visit capped off a glorious day of visiting all the vintage and antique shops that Miami has to offer, a few glorious examples to be seen below. How insane is that horse lamp!!!!!!

Trust me when I say that there is no better way to end a day than cocktails and a bite at The Viceroy. I was the biggest dork snapping pictures like a tourist, but I didn't care. These pictures can't even begin to explain the decadence.

That fireplace is roughly 15' high, and why, exactly, don't I dip all my furniture in rubber!? It's ingenious!

Can I get married again just so that I can have my wedding shower here?

I'd like another cocktail please, and can you just rub this sun block on my back? Oh, it's time for my spa appointment? Well, you know, a woman's work is never done...

This is the river of joy... what more can I say? Well, this... that chandelier ~ no less than 15 FEET across and lemon yellow.

So, imagine, if you will, a day spent browsing some of the most phenomenally designed furniture of the last 60 years, having lunch with daytime wine, more shopping, followed by this feast for the senses, yummy dinner, inspired cocktails and, let's not forget, riveting conversation the whole way through, provided by my fabulous MIL Rena! Hey, Rena, when are we going to see that Taj Mahal Opera?

...I said, "I wish my life more closely resembled Rachel Getting Married? I mean, without the dead brother and the alcoholism and the fighting and the car accidents, of course. I want these guys to be playing "Here Comes the Bride" every time I leave my house to go to the grocery store.

And these guys to serenade me while I am doing the laundry (as infrequent as that may be) And lastly, I would like this cake every Sunday following brunch on the lawn with a ton of crazy people in jewel toned saris dancing and paper lanterns every where.

This lovely vintage chesterfield sofa is a piece of Seattle history. Littler's was an upscale clothier from 1931-1996. This is where you would sit to admire you gentlemen or lady friend as they tried on some of the finest attire Seattle had to offer. As the picture above clearly implies, it's entirely possible that Bing Crosby actually sat on this couch! What? You say that's a quite a stretch? Aah, what do you know.

It's such a shame that cigarettes are out of fashion, doesn't this lovely lounger make you want to relax in your silk peignior while sipping a manhattan and smoking a, why maybe, a Chesterfield?

Suburban Outfitters

So I follow Revival Home and Garden on twitter. (See how technologically advanced I have become? (twitter is new to me)) Anyhow, last night Leah, the owner, tweeted that she wondered about Urban Outfitters home, or rather apartment, decor items. As I have been a fan of finding the cheapest possible furniture available for quite some time, I do have a few of their peices in my house. I can't speak to the quality of their case pieces (probably crap), but the stuff I have, I really like.

The headboard, lamp and lampshade are from Urban. They are in my little Leah's bedroom.This is in Abigail and Leah's bathroom. I suck at taking pictures, but the mirror is Urban as well as the light fixture. Actually the light itself is some halogen junk from Ikea, but the "crystal" fixture around it is from Urban.By the way, Leah, if you didn't get my comment response to your comment on my blog, I am super flattered and thrilled that you have even seen my blog, let alone like my stuff. I love your store and can't wait till you get settled into your new location, where ever that may be. I am the dork that voted for Bellevue.

I'm trying desperately to clean my house. Can't you tell how much cleaning I am able to get done while typing! It's such an overwhelming task. Until this month, I felt a compulsive need to keep EVERYTHING, in case I might need it one day, you know.

Well, one of my other personalities has decided to push it's way to the front after decades of being suffocated in the back by all the crap I surround myself with. Ooh, I'll have to come up with a name for this new personality... more on that later. Anyhow, now, for the first time ever I am purging. I mean seriously purging. Just as I was lamenting the lack of "designed" computers, I find this. Maybe a ming vase doesn't jive with your decor, but just imagine the possibilities! What if your Jonathan Adleresque gourd lamp was also your CPU! Maybe your monitor can be a white lacquered rococo plasma panel mounted on the wall next to it that display digital art when not in use. The days of unsightly grey plastic junk littering the landscape of our lives are numbered. I can't wait till my technology doesn't dominate my aesthetic surroundings. There is still the matter of all the other garbage and mess that I surround myself with. Which brings me full circle back to lamenting the lack of housekeeper. Check out the specs on engadget

I feel that I have strayed a bit recently from the true and pure intent of this blog. I feel the need to refocus. To that end, I will now proceed to bitch about the stuff I want, and don't have.

(in order of importance)

1. housekeeper (seriously, before something starts growing in my bathroom)

2. a 15' x 15' Flor area rug in my living room, Shaggy Sheep in Gotland Grey (this is not actually Gotland Grey, but I liked this picture better)

pretty, but why is this the only "designed" laptop out there. I want a laptop designed by Kelly Wearstler, and I would like it to look like this, if you please... please?

6. Speaking of Kelly Wearstler, last on the list for tonight is Hue 2009. Not yet realeased book about... I'll let you guess. It's not going to be released until November 1st. It's a whopping (and totally ridiculous) $100. And I must have it.

Getting a Brazilian....

mocha, that is. Why, what did you think I was talking about?

I have developed a very bad habit with a dear friend of mine. We have started having extremely decadent coffee and pastries in the morning. It is a lovely moment of liesure in an otherwise sticky and frantic sort of day.

We used to go to Cafe Oriel, in Kirkland (R.I.P., sniff, sniff, wiping away a tear) That was even more dangerous, because not only did it involve rich and creamy lattes, but also mimosas (hold the orange juice, right Sarah). Hooray for putting kids in preschool!

Another new favorite is Belle Pastry, chocolate coissant and a non-fat vanilla cappuccino sitting outside in the glorious, previously unheard of, Bellevue sunshine! Pure bliss.

But the best coffee of the week was from Kitanda Brazilian Espresso & Bakery in Redmond, of all places. Our Brazilian Mocha, which is made with sweetened condensed milk, instead of chocolate, was a complete work of art. Creating these works of art was a lovely gentlemen by the name of Thiago. How perfect is that! Somehow, it wouldn't have been as good if it was served up by a Bill or Kevin, right?

I highly recommend taking the time to visit with Thiago at Kitanda. You will not be dissapointed. The only negative, is that like everything else on the Eastside, it's in a strip mall. Thiago makes up for it though.

I do believe that the subtle refinement that has been stripped from our society is the cause of many of today's woes. Handwriting, manners, spelling. etc... So I do make an admittedly small effort to check spelling on words that I am not quite certain about. However, I may now be willing to admit that http://www.urbandictionary.com/ may not be as reliable a source as Miriam Webster. I'm not saying for sure, but it is possible that just because a dictionary is self proclaimed as "the shiznit" does not mean that it really is, in fact, "the shiznit". So despite what http://www.urbandictionary.com/ says, luddite is actually with 2 d's, not one.

I know that my taste has been a little on the brassy side lately, but I still have room in my heart for chrome. I wish I had room in my brain for camera skills (sorry for the crappy shot with the desk in the corner), but alas...

This absolutely stunning queen size headboard is all sleek and shiny and sexy. It's got the whole Hollywood Regency thing goin on. It has been attributed to Milo Baughman and to Design Institute of America, don't know which, don't care. I think Kelly Wearstler would approve, and for those of you who know me, that is where I set my bar. Where I set my drink is another matter entirely. Ooh, this would be cool in a bedroom with a little built in bar. Mini-bars in the bedroom, I say not just for hotels anymore.

Foster Puppy for Adoption ~ very low maintenance

Petite, well mannered, although slightly underweight (note the ribs) dog available for adoption. Loves to sit by the fire and look graceful, while you rub her lovingly on the head. She stands only 24 inches tall, so perfect for condo living, but would also enjoy taking in the view from the window of your country home. She was terribly exhausted after her trying rescue, so was not up to a serious photo shoot, but we will try again in the morning to capture her in more natural lighting. Send me an email if you are interested in meeting her.

Ok, so that was totally queer, and not in a good way! I don't know what's gotten into me, you'd think I was selling "ducks in bonnets" and talking to (or worse, for) my cats. Whatever, isn't she lovely? I am going to have my daughter name her in the morning. I know what your thinking, once you name her you can't give her away. Too true...

Apparently, I have a thing for black and brass. Who knew. Certainly not I. I don't think anything in my house is black and brass. I just built my house and chrome is already losing it's luster, metaphorically of course. (the parts not covered in apple juice and yogurt are still quite shiny). And don't get me wrong, chrome is classic and will never fall out of my favor, but brass is really capturing my eye these days. The black lacquer on these pieces is like an aged piano finish and the insane brass hardware is picked up by a simple gold painted detail that frames the drawers. You can see a similiar piece here (see how the mega price tag on that one ever so subtly points out what a great value mine is? (for prices email me)), also made by American of Martinsville. This is seriously well made stuff.

See, I am both stunningly beautiful and insanely talented, with incredible confidence that allows me to pull of fashions of bygone eras with grace and ease. Right?
Ok fine, I'm lying. You would have found out sooner or later. I did mention before, in one of my previous posts about the unbelievably talented (she actually is) Amber Alexander and her lovely lady portrait, that I found a quite striking portrait in a vintage shop in West Palm Beach. Well, allow me to introduce Fifi Sufios. She was painted by Franz Reichmann sometime in the late 1800's (or so I've been told). Fifi lives above my mantle with her cat Gigi, whom you will meet at a later date. If I could die and come back as a piece of canvas, this would be the one.

btw, you'll notice no scavenger tag on this one, she is not for sale. she will sit in her position, looking down her nose and judging me for all eternity.

Somehow, that seems a little more swanky than sitting around drinking wild turkey and crying over past issues of Domino. But I digress, back to the chair. I'm thinking it is from the 30's as it was the favorite chair of a 1929 Harvard grad, and was lovingly cared for for 60 some odd years by his wife. The proof is in the Hasty Pudding, as the leather on this chair is near perfection.

But this table is so devine, that I am sure you will forgive me. Incredible brushed brass legs in the style of the Gateway Arch by Eero Saarinen in St. Louis.

Fabulous pair of Fighting "Roosters" We don't agree with "rooster" fighting, so maybe they need to live at oposite ends of your mantle.

These two lovelies are identical, so theoretically they could be placed in seperate homes. Obviously we'd rather adopt them out together, pheasants love to live in pairs.

I am pleased to announce my latest venture (to no one, as no one reads my damn blog!) I have started selling a line of hand picked vintage furniture and accesories (i was going to say objet d'art, but I don't think I can pull it off ) Most of my pieces will be featured at KOAP, the fine retail establishement of my new friend Diane Shultz, in Kirkland. It's really a trip to my pieces in a real store. I mean a really real store. Not an antique mall or consignment shop (or goodwill), where they'll take any old crap. I feel validated!

So when you see the Scavenger tag at the top of a new post and you will be able to see whatever new lovelies I have for sale. Seriously people, if you buy some of my stuff, then eventually I can take the vicariously out of my name and actually get some goodies for myself!

I posted earlier about AmberAlexander's etsy site. As usual, I did not do my due diligence, cause I'm a slacker. I have since seen her blog and I just about fell off my seat! It is the epitomy of lovely. I LOVE IT! It is charming and whimsical and exploding with talent. I know I am heading into the territory of being overly dramatic, but right now, as I type this I would venture to say that no artwork I have seen recently has made me so happy. With the exception of Fifi Sufois, of course. (yes, I will get around to posting her picture so you can put a face to the name) (of course, Sarah, since you are the only one reading my blog, you've already seen her, so what's the hurry?) I digress...look at her blog. I want to do a gallery wall running all the way down the hallway to my kids play room, with frames exactly like she has on her blog. Yeah, it makes me happy just thinking about!

I know that no one is reading this anyhow, but if you are, don't stop now, just because you think I'm a lunatic. I mean, is it really crazy to be jealous of a doll? She's thinner, prettier, has better skin and a nicer wardrobe than I do. Really, if you think about it, it would be crazy not to be jealous of her. So down to the details. There is this whole wild world out there of people who are into these dolls. They are called Ball Joint Dolls (BJD) and that's because the have balls in their joints! Are you paying attention? It is not really wierd that these dolls can be posed in completely lifelike positions. What's weird is that people pose them in completely life like positions. And it seems that this is a hobby exclusively for fantastic photographers, so that rules me out. If you want to see the some of the best check out Squeaky Monkey on flickr. She is mostly all about Blythe, (the one with the big head). I don't really dig on the big head so much, I'm more for the momoko and misaki dolls. These dolls are CRAZY expensive, so this is total fantasy, but I want to cover my oldest daughters wall with glossy white boxes mounted on the wall and have these fabulously couture dolls posing all over the place. I will periodically post more of these BJD dolls, just cause I think they're pretty.

I can't walk past a row of apothecary bottles with glass pipettes and not stop. You know, simpler times and bygone eras and what not. Anyhow, wandering the makeup section at Nordstroms, I came upon Tom Ford Private Blend. There is something incredibly alluring about combining the smell of a smoky bar and a bakery. What would a therapist have to say about that? It's on the super expensive side even as far as fragrances go, but (shhh) they will give you a very generous sample in a tiny glass vial (love it!). One drop goes a loooooong way. I have never worn a fragrance with so much staying power. And yes, the packaging is every bit as sexy as the scent itself.

Robert Bissell - another magical artist

I discovered Robert Bissell while walking down the main street in Lahaina, Maui last year. His work is charming and HUGE. I think I would keep it to a childrens area, just the right balance between whimsical subject matter and sophisticated technique. Or something like that, I don't actuall know what I'm talking about, I just know what I like.

I went to Kirkland (WA) for coffee (Cafe Ladro - perfect latte) this morning after dropping my littlest off at preschool. I took a little walk afterward to try to erase the little feta spinach quiche I ended up eating with my non-fat latte. (walking at a snails pace 2 blocks with my face squished against all the boutique windows definately burns off the 500 calorie breakfast, right?) Anyhow, I stumbled across the most amazing find. Pure Home. a beautiful boutique speciallizing in COLOR. OMG, they have a paint bar! Like a real bar, all glossy white and swanky, with barstools and everything. And behind the bar, (where the liquor goes), is all...PAINT!!! I think my friend burned more calories laughing at me for being so overly dramatic in my breathless joy at finding this new resource. I love furniture and lighting and flooring and fixtures and all the other little bits and baubles involved in design, but I hate paint. I am so bad at it. I will be counting the seconds until I get in there for my first consultation. Master Bedroom, I'm looking at you. By the way, this picture does not even begin to do it justice. You have to see the bar!

My master bath is all carrera tile, glass, ebony stained wood and shiny chrome. I want this for a stool in my steam shower. I never use the steam feature in my shower because steam makes me lazy and sleepy and I don't have a seat. If I sat on the floor, I would get my skin boiled (steamed) off. I wonder how it would work? It's not like dried mushrooms or anything, I mean you can't reconstitute petrified wood, can you?

So if any of you people can actually afford to spend $1500-$2000 on a stump, you can do it here. Although I did see better ones at a great store in West Palm Beach that I can' remember the name of. Oh well.

By the way, how hot is the lovely lady on this bottle!? I don't have a very great sense of smell. It makes me really sad, because when I can smell, prefectly orchestrated fragrances make me really happy. My all time favorite is Chanel No. 5. It's just so classic. For a regular day, I wear J'adore L'absolu. It has a muted warm scent, almost like your wearing your husbands cologne (as if I could get my husband to wear cologne, I wish!) But I searched for a really long time to find this perfume that I smelled once and didn't buy and regretted ever since. They stopped production for a while and are now back in the swing of things. Nana De Bary's story is amazing, she was on the beach in Thailand being totally glamorous and wonderful (I assume), when the Tsunami hit. She actually had to run for her life. She stopped working for a while to recover and when she came back to her fragrances she "chose to strengthen the concentration from eau de toilette to eau de parfum, so they are more tenacious on the skin." "...they are made to be deeper and hold on longer." I love that she translated her experience that way. Check out her full story on her website. Something about the words she used here makes me think that wearing this perfume would make you feel sexy and slinky and powerful and invincible at the same time.

I love so many of the new designers, but the really high quality stuff is so expensive. And the really crappy quality stuff is so expensive. Not to mention that whole contributing to global destruction and consumerism.

So I really love vintage furniture. Better quality materials, construction and prices. I have furnished most of my 3000 sq. ft. house for like $12 on craigslist. But I need to reupholster almost everything! Seriously, almost everything. I would love to buy everything vintage from 1stdibs.com where it's already refinished and reupholstered and fabulously perfect, but no such luck.

So here is a wonderously adorable website to check out. Nia at SummerlandStyle.com does upholstery, design consultation and sells her beautifully redesigned furniture finds. I will be eagerly awaiting her upcoming StyleGuide, which I hear may include some DIY videos on how to upholster my craigslist treasures myself! Ah, I'd rather wait till I can afford to hire her to do it.

So faux bois is really in, right...right...well, it is. I don't normally like building products that try to pretend they are something they aren't, but this is trying to pretend not to try to look like something it isn't and isn't trying to be. Right? Whatever. I need to fence my ponds so my children don't drown, and I really like this. Industrial, rustic, farm fency, concretish. You get the picture. It's called woodcrete rail, the name says it all.

I have a thing for lovely lady portraits. I just bought an incredible portrait from a store in Palm Beach to hang over my mantle. My daughter named her Fifi Sufois! I will post a picture of her later.

So frequently they are a little on the creepy side, but this one is absolutely charming in everyway. A little on the whimsical side, but I love her just the same. This piece and other magical work by the same artist can be found on etsy at amberalexander.

Interestingly, this artist is selling prints of her work, not the originals, so VERY affordable.

Letter to Mr. Townsend at Conde Nast

Dear Mr. Townsend,

I have just learned of the decision to cease publication of Domino Magazine. More accurately, I read the news yesterday and it has taken me a full day to process. My understanding is that this is due to a drop in advertising dollars, and not a drop in readership.

I wonder if your advertisers fully understand the market and demographic they will be losing with the close of Domino. I am sure they feel they have done their due diligence to determine where their advertising dollars are best spent, but we all know that there can be error and misinterpretation in even the most thorough study.

To illustrate my point, I am a 33 year old married mother of 2 young girls. I live in an affluent neighborhood in a suburb of Seattle and my husband is in management at a large, well known software company in the area. We just built our home and are in what seems to be the never ending process of decorating.

My friends are young, affluent mothers, business owners and executives. For the most part our sensibilities are neither fully modern, traditional, bohemian nor country. Until Domino came around we didn’t have a design publication that spoke to our needs. We are not outfitting faux Tuscan style spec houses or uber-modern modular prairie homes. We have between us, a variety of architectural tastes and design aesthetics, yet we all are able to find inspiration (and purchasing resources) from the pages of your magazine.

Economic times are tough, and we are all feeling the weight of it, but our lives are not stopping. People are still remodeling, building, decorating and purchasing. Thank goodness they are, for the sake of those who make a living in the construction industry. Certainly there are those whose financial situation has put these activities on hold. However, they are spending their time and energy planning and waiting for the moment they can bring their dreams to life by turning their space into the home they imagine for themselves and their families.

There is no other publication that can fill the void left by the absence of Domino. I truly believe your magazine spoke to the future of design, whereas the other publications available are directed at the past. We will be left with no choice but to move online, and try to find wherever your creative and talented contributors take up residence in cyberspace (Grace Bonney, I’m talking to you!) However useful the internet is to further research a product once I have discovered it, it is in no way as compelling as seeing it in print.

This brings me to my self-serving reason for writing this letter. I know this will come off as being overly dramatic, but it is the truth, none the less. Receiving Domino Magazine in the mail is the best part of my month. I wait for it. I get jealous if my friends get it in the mail before I do. I have every issue ever printed and reference them constantly. I carve out a special time, where I can’t be interrupted and I melt into the pages. It is the equivalent of daytime champagne, chocolate and manicures all in one, with absolutely none of the guilt.

Additionally, I would like to add that I received a survey request in my inbox from Domino. It asked me to list every item of value in my home from number of flat screen tvs to prada bags and jimmy choos. It then proceeded to ask for my home address.
